Winter Singing Weekend

February 4-6

Patty Cuyler, Val Mindel, Petrana Koutcheva, with dances led by Larry Gordon and Bulgarian folk band music taught by Ivaylo Koutchev

Photo of Malhaz teaching, 2005 Winter Workshop Village Harmony’s annual mid-winter weekend workshop, with dancing and singing and instrument playing, is a sure bet to fire up a lot more than just your voice! This year the weekend will be held at the Roundhouse in Colrain, western Massachusetts. With healthy organic gourmet meals (which we get to help prepare), cozy sleeping nooks and a great open rehearsal space and hardwood dance floor, the Roundhouse is the perfect spot for a warm mid-winter gathering of old friends and new acquaintances.

The weekend will begin with supper on Friday night and close with a review session after luncheon on Sunday. We’ll sing from a wide range of traditions, including American Appalachian harmonies and shape-note songs, Bulgarian folk songs, and an eclectic selection of other traditional ethnic musics. Plenty of dancing and instrument playing before and after the singing sessions!

The Roundhouse

The Roundhouse

This marvelous facility was purpose-built as a retreat center by the owner, story-teller Bekki Tippens. The 14-sided building is filled with ingenious and fanciful detail work. The main room is round, a fabulous singing space with an encircling balcony and 3-story domed ceiling and ample nooks and corners for reading, relaxing and socializing. The majority of the beds are in small sleeping cubbies resembling ships’ berths, radiating off a second floor circular hallway. There are also a number of private sleeping rooms, both in the house and in the adjacent small cottage, plus tent space on the land. Bekki is a gracious host and will help plan menus and help out in the kitchen.
